Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7B Active Noise-Cancelling Closed-Back Headphone Review

Active noise cancellation’s all the rage in headphones these days and Audio-Technica’s contribution to this trend in cans are the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7B Active Noise Cancelling Closed-Back Headphones.

Probably the best thing to happen in audio technology, active sound cancellation involves the generation of what could probably be described as a mirror image of ambient sound to cancel it out.

The funny thing is, if expert and audiophile reviews are any gauge, it seems the higher one goes up the price ladder, the worse it gets.

You’d think that high-end cans would give as much bang as the bucks you hand out for them. Alack and alas, as the Bose QuietComfort 15 noise-cancellation headphones and the faddish Beats Studio Dr. Dre cans prove, it just isn’t so.

The Audio-Technica noise cancelling headphones fall right about midway in the price ladder, retailing in the $200 range, or about a hundred bucks less than the Bose and Beats Studio cans.

And just as the observation above noted, yes, quite a number of Audio-Technica headphones reviews found the ATH-ANC7B better than Bose noise-cancelling cans but still sorely short in delivering the goodies.

The lowdown

Supposed to be the improved version of its predecessor, the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7, the Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B Active Noise Cancelling Closed-Back Headphones are smallish over-ear cans.

Okay, let’s start with the pros, or at least, the better stuff:

• Adequate noise cancellation – It’s not bad, but it’s not so good either. Most experts rate the ATH-ANC7B just slightly behind the Bose QuietComfort cans.
• Better than average sound – The Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7B delivers the goods but don’t expect anything earthshaking. If anything, there is little detail in the sound and the treble can be brittle. Don’t expect any low and dirty bass either. There’s none of the promise that Audio Technica touted when it rolled these cans out.
• Can operate without batteries – This is perhaps the only real advantage the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7B Active Noise Cancelling Closed-Back Headphones have over the Bose noise-cancellation headphones, or the Beats Studios for that matter. They actually can operate without batteries in passive mode, so you don’t have to lose the beat when the batteries die.

And now for the cons:

• Bad sound quality with noise cancellation turned off – The sound delivered by the ATH-ANC7B with noise cancellation off has been described by most everyone as crappy and beset by irritating background fuzz.
• Awful sound leakage – These are cans you don’t want to be using in a quiet room. Sound leakage is simply bad, even at moderate volumes, so be prepared to have everyone else listening in, which kind of cancels out the fact that these are supposed to be closed-cup headphones.
• Badly angled earcups – While the earcups are fairly comfortable, the bad angling prevents them from fitting as snuggle as others in its class.
• Poor quality materials – Not a few users, including those who genuinely liked the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7B, griped about how the plastic headband cracked and eventually broke after little more than a year of regular use.

So-so passable

That said, if you aren’t a hardcore audiophile and just want noise cancellation headphones on which to groove to your favorite sounds without too much outside interference, the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7B Active Noise Cancelling Closed-Back Headphones ought to work well enough.
