Active technology

What is it? Active technology is the electronic design inside the earphones which works actively to reduce noise.

How does it work? Bose has made huge improvements in their active technologies in the QuietComfort 15 from their other leading headphones in the following ways:

The electronics consist of microphones on the inside and outside of the ear cup. The microphones on the inside sense the kinds of sounds you want to hear while the outside microphones pick up the sounds you are trying to block out. They work independently to be able to compare the 2 different kinds of sounds. This way the Bose QuietComfort 15 is able to constantly measure these 2 sounds making it an easy task to enhance the kinds of sounds on the inside and therefore actively reduce the kinds of sounds that are on the outside with advanced technology inside the ear cup that produces a cancelling signal to cancel out the outside noise. This continuous comparison and reaction effectively reduces noise like never before.

Passive Technology

Passive technology is based on the physical design of the Bose QuietComfort 15. Learnings from previous Bose QC products have assisted in coming up with a new and improved design in ear cushion technology on the ear cup to physically prevent sound from entering the cup blocking more sound than ever before.

Lets take a look at some of the features of the Bose QuietComfort 15:

  • Enjoy your music and movies even more, with clear and lifelike Bose sound
  • Comfortable, around-the-ear fit
  • AAA battery: 35 hours average life
  • Ideal for frequent flyers

If you want more info on this headphone, I  suggest you take a look at the reviews on Amazon here. It is a highly praised noise cancelling headphone.

The Good:

  • Sound is blocked out in a larger range from your own voice to the traffic outside
  • Material used is a higher quality leather to improve comfort
  • There is a high and low volume setting switch. Low setting switch lowers the volume levels of strong audio output signals which are common on airline system. The high volume setting can be used for MP3 players, iPods or computers.

The Bad:

  • Compared to the predecessor the Bose QuietComfort 15 makes a loud click when turned on
  • When the noise blocking is activated there is a feeling of pressure on the ear and long periods can make the ears hot
  • Because of the sheer size of the Bose QuietComfort 15, this is not for being mobile, but rather for sitting down.

Overall, the Bose QuietComfort 15 has received an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 in all of the areas of comfort, noise cancelling, sound quality and ease of use. And most have considered it a worthwhile investment.

Lets see what other current buyers are saying about the Bose QuietComfort 15:

Mel R Scurbica

“I bought the Quiet Comfort 15 headphones for one reason. I work from home. I live in a townhouse complex where it seems that every day some neighbor is doing loud construction in their unit. Some days it sounds like a construction site, with loud circular saws, metallic banging sounds, etc. In addition that that, there are landscapers using leaf-blowers and hedge trimmers, tree guys using wood chippers, and kids that run around outside screaming. The other day, I had a headache and the circular saws started up. “That’s it,” I said. “I’m getting some noise-cancelling headphones…..”
