%Category My Review of Beats Studio by Dr.Dre Hi Def Noise Cancelling Over Ear HeadphoneYou really can’t blame folks – from hoodies to serious audiophiles – from wanting to get their hands on a pair of Beats Studio by Dr. Dre – Hi-Def Noise-Cancelling Over-Ear Headphones even at the jaw-dropping price of around $350. Heck, it was designed, after all, with the help of Da Man himself, the legendary actor and rapper Dr. Dre, and does come from Monster Cable, so whatever can go wrong?

To be fair, there’s a lot to like about the Beats Studio, like the excellent bass output and the fact that it comes with the Monster iSoniTalk headphone cable, which makes it ready for the iPhone®, Blackberry®, and other music phones, and even has an inline call answer button and microphone so you can drop the rapping and start yacking.

First impressions

At first glance, the Beats Studio makes a great first impression too. It comes in a sleeved box that slides open to reveal eye candy: the headphones folded in a touring case. The box also carries the (1.3-meter) 4.25-foot cables, adaptors (one converts the 1/8-inch mini-jack to a 1/4-inch TRS connector, the other is a two-pronged airline audio jack), a micro-fiber cleaning cloth, and two AAA batteries.

Another plus is that the audio cables aren’t permanently connected to the headphones, which makes it handy if you want to switch to another kind of cable or to a longer one, or if you need to replace a damaged cable. Just plug it into the single female mini-jack port and you’re good to go.

The upside

So, what’s to like about the Beats Studio by Dr. Dre – Hi-Def Noise-Cancelling Over-Ear Headphones?

  • Great bass sound

  • Convenient carrying case

The real score

Okay, applause over.

Now take a deep breath if you’ve just palmed over three C’s for these cans.

The lowdown is that most serious audiophiles say the Beats Studio by Dr. Dre – Hi-Def Noise-Cancelling Over-Ear Headphones just don’t pan out with the hype.

For instrumentals studio headphones at half the price or less will leave the Beats Studio eating dust. It’s the same with samples studio headphones are way, way better.

In fact, it is almost laughable to even think that the Beats Studio beats AKG headphones. Now Dr. Dre may be awesome but he sure isn’t Quincy Jones, as any audiophile or plain serious music lover will tell you. And with Jones’ AKGs at half the price, you get the idea.

Well, okay, the Beat Studio beats Bose headphones. But that’s about it.

Other bummers:

  • Won’t work without batteries – This is a major bummer since the Beats Studio could leave you in the poorhouse stocking up on the batteries, which are needed for amplification and noise cancelling which, admittedly, is a plus factor. If you’re a heavy user, expect battery changes every two weeks. A month if you’re a casual listener.
  • Flimsy construction and short finish lifespan – The eye candy on these cans do fade out all too quickly and they’re liable to break apart on you even if you have the most delicate touch.

In the end, the rule remains the same – caveat emptor. Overall, if you’re the type who loves your sound really bass-y and don’t mind shelling out the dough, by all means grab the Beats Studio by Dr. Dre – Hi-Def Noise-Canceling Over-Ear Headphones.
